Hugh howey sand series6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() It haunted me when I wasn't reading it, and after finishing it, it still haunts me. I haven't been able to stop thinking about this book. But I almost immediately picked it back up again because it was so good. ![]() I got very invested in the characters, and kept having to put the book down because I was so scared horrible things would happen to them. ![]() Their father abandoned them years before, disappearing into the wasteland of No Man's Land, where no one has ever returned from. Their mother is the owner of the local bar and brothel. The two youngest survive on their own in the town of Springston. The two oldest are divers, and some of the very best. This is the story of a family of four siblings. The world before - our world - is buried under hundreds upon hundreds of meters of sand, and divers wearing special suits swim down into the depths to bring back remnants of the past to sell. He's created a post-apocalyptic world where sand has overrun everything, and the inhabitants of what was once Colorado have to fight against the ever encroaching sand. ![]() The world of Sand is about life on the margins and doing whatever is necessary to survive. Howey has created a world very different from Wool. ![]()

The making of star wars rinzler6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() “I knew we were making a book, when I found (the interviews),” Rinzler says. “I used to drive by and look at the lines and think, `what?'” “ Star Wars got an amazing response,” Carrie Fisher says. None of them knew they were part of an epoch-changing movie. Those interviews, with actors Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill who spoke frankly on their roles and experiences, were done before the film’s 1977 release. (This) is almost an oral history based on the interviews done in 1975-1977.” ![]() The difficulties of making Star Wars have been well documented elsewhere but Rinzler says, “There were a lot of stories circulating out there by people (who) either hadn’t done the research, or aren’t lucky enough to have the interviews. Rinzler has gone back into the archival materials at Skywalker Ranch and produced a hefty, and pricy, art book crammed with newly unearthed interviews early, crudely drawn sketches of now-classic spaceships and unpublished photographs. Leviathan scott6/27/2023 ![]() I also had a little bit of a problem with all of the mechanic and scientific jargon. Even though the unique world in this novel is amazing, the presentation dulled my enjoyment. A lot of the world-building was coupled with info-dumping. The first 100 pages were extremely slow and I almost DNFed it. One of my biggest problems with this book was the pacing. ![]() Leviathan is one of those series that starts off without a bang, but slowly escalates into amazingness. ![]() ![]() It is also my least favorite of the group. This is the first installment of the Leviathan series. These two characters' paths are crossed and they, and the world, will never be the same because of it. But all of that is thrown into the toilet when his parents are brutally murdered, which incites a war that is quickly spreading to the rest of the war. So far, no one has called her bluff, but her deception is going to be hard to keep in the madness of global war.Īleksander is a prince and the possible heir to the throne. ![]() In a stroke of good luck, she is assigned to the most prestigious ship in the Air Force, the Leviathan. She is fiercely loyal to her country, but her country does not believe that women like her can make a difference in the world besides creative needlework and getting pregnant. Mix these things together and you get Leviathan.ĭeryn Sharp is a girl masquerading as a boy in the British Air Force. A commoner, a prince who is anything but common, and a war that is going to tear the world apart. ![]()

Neverworld marisha pessl6/26/2023 ![]() I'll admit, I was nervous going in I adore Night Film and I had seen some vastly differing opinions surrounding this one, so I wasn't quite sure where I would land. Gossamer Madwick, The Dark House at Elsewhere Bendīe still my heart Marisha Pessl has done it again! I'm amazed at how she can take such varying genres and subject matter and manage to grasp my attention so thoroughly no matter what she writes about. Otherwise, the plot was thought-provoking and unique, the characters were interesting and well-developed, and I had a fantastic time reading it. I was not totally blown away by the ending and there were certain reveals that felt unrealistic. I don’t have many critiques for Neverworld Wake. It was bizarre, yet easy to understand and engaging all the same. It reads like a typical mystery – other than the fact that the characters must solve it through the same 11-or-so hour period every day. I expected this novel to have a much higher level of science fiction influence than it did, which I think helped me to enjoy the book more. I really enjoyed the world of Neverworld Wake. ![]() Neverworld Wake does retain a similar air of mystery to Night Film, but other than that, the story is entirely different. If you’re going into this book expected a young adult rendition of Night Film, don’t pick this one up. A great first young adult novel from Marisha Pessl! ![]() ![]() I really enjoyed this book! I managed to remain intrigued throughout the entire story. ![]() |
